Paleozoic bedrock in the quadrangle is within the Appalachian thrust belt of the southern Appalachian orogen. The southern Appalachian thrust belt consists of Cambrian through Pennsylvanian sedimentary rocks that have been deformed by northeast-striking, northwest-translated thrust faults and thrust-related folds during the late Paleozoic Alleghanian orogeny. Paleozoic units mapped within the Greenwood quadrangle range in age from Late Cambrian to Early Pennsylvanian. The distribution of alluvium of Quaternary age has also been mapped. The structural geology of the Greenwood quadrangle is dominated by the Birmingham anticlinorium and the Cahaba synclinorium, which are regional-scale structures within the central part of the Appalachian thrust belt in Alabama. These structures are associated with two emergent frontal thrust ramps, the Jones Valley fault and the Opossum Valley fault. The Jones Valley fault, a southeast-dipping thrust fault in the central part of the Birmingham anticlinorium, truncates the Opossum Valley fault in the subsurface. The Jones Valley fault forms the roof of a ductile duplex of Cambrian rocks referred to as the Bessemer mushwad. The Opossum Valley fault bounds the northwest side of the anticlinorium northwest of the Greenwood quadrangle. The Cahaba synclinorium is developed on the trailing edge of the Jones Valley thrust sheet. Its gently dipping northwest limb underlies the central and southeastern part of the Greenwood quadrangle. Structures developed on the northwest limb of the synclinorium include normal faults that affect the distribution of Silurian, Devonian, and Mississippian rocks; the Dickey Springs anticline and fault (a backthrust that exposes uplifted Mississippian strata in Shades Valley); the Belle Ellen syncline/Tacoa anticline fold pair; and the Beaverdam Creek anticline. The fact that this database was edited for a scale of 1:24,000 means that higher resolution information is not present in the dataset. Plotting at scales larger than 1:24,000 will not yield greater real detail, although it may reveal fine-scale irregularities below the intended resolution of the database. Similarly, where this database is used in combination with other data of higher resolution, the resolution of the combined output will be limited by the lower resolution of these data. Lineage: Source_Information: Source_Contribution: Data used to generate this dataset were obtained from field measurements and observations by professionals working for the Geological Survey of Alabama. This information includes location data and other important attribute information. Process_Step: Process_Description: Geological Survey of Alabama geologists record locational data points for structural measurements in a Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) projection. These locational data points are plotted on scale-stable media and digitized using a high-resolution digitizer table. Attributes are recorded using Microsoft Excel and converted into text files. These text files are then joined with the locational datasets. Contacts and faults are transferred from field maps to scale-stable material. The line work is then scanned, registered, and vectorized using ArcInfo. Line attributes are then linked to the datasets. Polygons are created using the digitized data from the contacts and faults dataset. ArcGIS personal geodatabase files have been created from existing ArcInfo coverages and an .mxd file for the map is created. Shapefiles are created from exported feature classes.
