          Boat ramps and marinas in the coastal counties of Mississippi are included in this data layer. These 
          facilities were primarily derived from a document from the Mississippi Department of Marine Resources 
          website. Due to changes after Hurricane Katrina, some marinas and boat ramps may have been abandoned or gone 
          out-of-business. Some new facilities have been built since the document was published. This layer may not 
          include all available facilities.
      Purpose: 
          This dataset was developed to include in the Gulf of Mexico Data Atlas to show recreational facilities.

              Description: 
                  The Department of Marine Resources website provided a document describing the public access sites 
                  along the coast. The names, coordinates, and facility information came from this document. The 
                  information was entered into an Excel spreadsheet and converted to a shapefile. The shapefile was 
                  overlaid with aerial imagery and coordinates were adjusted as necessary to properly locate the site. 
                  Addresses were confirmed with other sources including Google Maps and the Yellow Pages (www.YP.com). 
                  A few facilities were discovered using Google Maps that were not included in the original document 
                  and were added to the dataset. When completed, the shapefile was loaded into ArcSDE.
