Public Beach Access Sites Along the Panhandle,Southwest Coast, and the East Coast of Florida. Panhandle region includes Escambia County to Citrus County. Southwest Florida region includes Hernando County to Monroe County. East Coast region includes Nassau County to Miami Dade County.
<purpose>Florida's beaches are important to many people, from commercial fishermen to wildlife watchers to the millions of vacationers that visit the state each year. Florida's sandy beaches are one of its major attractions for residents and visitors alike. While there are hundreds of miles of sandy beaches, many public access points are under-utilized because no one knows they exist. Locating beach access points can be quite a challenge for those who want to spend the day at the beach. In response to this, the Florida Coastal Management Program has developed this data so visitors can match their interests and needs with beach accesses along the Gulf of Mexico.</purpose>
<supplinf>This data set was developed by the Florida Coastal Management Program and by Dr. Stephen Holland at the University of Florida. Public beach access site data for the SW Gulf coastal counties was collected from the Fall of 2009 to the Summer of 2011. Data for the Florida east coast beach access points will be collected via GPS from June, 2011 to October, 2011, and updated/integrated into the comprehensive shapefile.</supplinf>

<attrdef>The State_ID attribute is a ten character alphanumeric code used for two purposes. The first is to provide a unique identification for each of the state's beach access points. The second purpose is to allow the user to sort the beach access points in a geographic arrangement around the state beginning with Nassau County down the Atlantic Coast, around the Keys, up the peninsula on the Gulf, and across the panhandle to Escambia County. The code is comprised of three main parts. The first part of the State ID is a two digit County_Num. This number helps sort each of the points in order around the state. The second part of the State_ID is two characters which identify the county. This part is used to separate the first and third parts of the code so the points can be sorted within each county. The third part of the code is the six digit County_ID.</attrdef>
