(sndgrvl_ops.shp) Geospatial_Data_Presentation_Form: vector digital data Publication_Information: Publication_Place: Tuscaloosa, Alabama Publisher: Geological Survey of Alabama Description: Abstract: This data set includes sand and gravel operations in the United States, clipped by the GSA to the boundaries of Mobile and Baldwin Co., Alabama. USGS: These data were obtained from information reported voluntarily to the USGS by the aggregate producing companies. The data represent commodities covered by the Minerals Information Team (MIT) of the U.S. Geological Survey, and the operations are those considered active in 1998 with production greater than 30,000 tons and surveyed by the MIT. Online linkage Purpose: This dataset was compiled by the Geological Survey of Alabama in support of the "Comprehensive GIS Inventory in Coastal Alabama" as funded by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration(NOAA) through the Coastal Impact Assistance Program (CIAP). Supplemental_Information: USGS:These data are intended for the geographic display and analysis at the national level, and for large regional areas. The data should be displayed and analyzed at scales appropriate for 1:2,000,000-scale data. No responsibility is assumed by the U.S. Geological Survey in the use of these data. Additional minerals operations information can be obtained from the U.S. Geological Survey Minerals Information web page at . Federal, State, or local regulatory bodies are not to reassign to the originators any authority for the decisions they make. Photographic or digital enlargement of these maps to scales greater than that at which they were originally delineated can cause misrepresentation of the data. If enlarged, the maps will not include the fine detail that would be appropriate for mapping at the large scale. Digital data files are periodically updated. Files are dated, and users are responsible for obtaining the latest version of the data. For each commodity, the Minerals Information Team (MIT) extracted from AMIS the nonproprietary information useful for this application, and placed this information in a separate data base. The MIT determined latitude and longitude for each mineral operation from at least one of the following sources: Delorme Street Atlas software (Searches performed on addresses.) (Searches performed on company or operation name.) (Searches performed on company or mine id.) (Searches performed on company or operation name.) Whenever possible the locational information was checked for accuracy. The resulting database file was loaded to ArcView and converted to ESRI Shapefile format. The National Atlas staff converted the shape file to an Arc/INFO coverage and then to NAD83. The National Atlas staff also added the State-fips code and converted the full State name to the two-character code. Several coordinate values were corrected so that point locations fell in the correct State. The result was then converted back to shapefile format. Process_Date: 2000 Process_Step: Process_Description: GSA clipped the original dataset to cover the area with the bounds of Mobile and Baldwin Counties, Alabama. Next, the dataset was unprojected into the geographic Clarke 1866, NAD 1927 when necessary. Some extraneous attribute fields may have been deleted.
