  Description:     
    Abstract:
      This coverage represents select 1968 oyster shell resource delineations and 
      volumes done by the Alabama Department of Conservation, Seafood Division,
      Alabama Marine Resources Laboratory in cooperation with the U.S. National
      Marine Fisheries Service, Radcliff Materials, Inc., Southern Industries 
      Corporation and the Alabama Department of Conservation, Engineering Section.
      Although the original reference delineates about 597 shell deposit areas,
      this thematic provides an overview and statistics of 28 of the larger
      delineated areas.

    Purpose:
      This dataset was compiled by the GIS program of the Geological Survey
      of Alabama in support of the "Comprehensive GIS Inventory in Coastal
      Alabama" as funded by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric
      Administration(NOAA) through the Coastal Impact Assistance Program.

    based on needs; however, they are responsible for the 
    appropriate application. Federal, State, or local regulatory
    bodies are not to reassign to the originators any authority
    for the decisions they make.

    Photographic or digital enlargement of these maps to scales
    greater than that at which they were originally delineated
    can cause misrepresentation of the data. If enlarged, the
    maps will not include the fine detail that would be
    appropriate for mapping at the large scale. Digital data
    files are periodically updated.  Files are dated, and users
    are responsible for obtaining the latest version of the data.
    Boundaries of polygons extending into the water (ocean or Great
    Lakes) should be considered arbitrary.

      Process_Description:
      The GSA digitized select polygon shapefiles from the afore mentioned 	reference from paper media into a .dxf format via MicroStation.  After, the 	.dxf was converted from .dxf into a .shp format, unprojected from UTM Zone 	16W NAD27 into geographic clarke 1866 Decimal Degrees, NAD27. Attributes were 	added to indicate the volume of shell deposits as well as the volume of 	overburden.
