Abstract:

These data describe the boundaries of sidescan sonar surveys carried out by contractors to NOAA?s Office of Coast Survey as part of the Gulf of Mexico Marine Debris Project (GOMMDP). These surveys are intended to locate marine debris in nearshore areas of the northeastern Gulf of Mexico deposited by hurricanes Katrina and Rita in 2005.

Purpose:

These data describe survey boundaries and are intended, in conjunction with data describing the location and attributes of identified debris items, to provide users with information regarding the distribution and nature of marine debris in the area.

Supplemental_Information:

During the 2005 hurricane season, hurricanes Katrina and Rita inflicted severe damage on the Gulf of Mexico (GOM) coastal region, and deposited huge amounts of debris over large areas of the Gulf coast. Submerged marine debris poses a hazard to vessel traffic and can adversely affect commercially viable fishing grounds. To address the submerged debris problem, Congress appropriated funds to survey areas potentially affected by submerged marine debris, tasking NOAA?s Office of Coast Survey and Office of Response and Restoration to conduct the surveys, compile and disseminate data in an effective and useable format, and carry out other outreach activities specific to this project.
