GSA File: crossection.shp) Geospatial_Data_Presentation_Form: vector digital data Publication_Information: Publication_Place: Tuscaloosa, Alabama Publisher: Geological Survey of Alabama Description: Abstract: Line showing location of hydrogeologic cross sections. Information used to construct this shapefile was taken from Geological Survey of Alabama Bulletin 126--Ground-Water Chemistry and Salt-Water Encroachment, Southern Baldwin County, Alabama by Robert V. Chandler, James D. Moore and Blakeney Gillett. Tuscaloosa, Alabama 1985. Plate 1-Well Locations and Types of Wells in Southern Baldwin County, Alabama. Purpose: This dataset was compiled by the GIS program of the Geological Survey of Alabama in support of the "Comprehensive GIS Inventory in Coastal Alabama" as funded by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) through the Coastal Impact Assistance Program (CIAP). If the user has modified the data in any way they are obligated to describe the types of modifications they have performed on the hardcopy map. User specifically agrees not to misrepresent these data sets, nor to imply that changes they made were approved by Geological Survey of Alabama (GSA). The GSA should be acknowledged as the originator of the data. This data set is to be used as a primary reference source. This is public information and may be interpreted by organizations, agencies, units of government, or others based on needs; however, they are responsible for the appropriate application. Federal, State, or local regulatory bodies are not to reassign to the originators any authority for the decisions they make. Photographic or digital enlargement of these maps to scales greater than that at which they were originally delineated can cause misrepresentation of the data. If enlarged, the maps will not include the fine detail that would be appropriate for mapping at the large scale. Digital data files are periodically updated. Files are dated, and users are responsible for obtaining the latest version of the data. Process_Step: Process_Description: Plates 1 through 9 from- GSA Bulletin 126--Ground-Water Chemistry and Salt-Water Encroachment, Southern Baldwin County, Alabama were scanned and saved in TIF format by the University of Alabama's Geocartograhy department. The scanned TIF was added to an ArcView project as an Image Analysis Data Source using the Image Analysis extension. It was then georeferenced with Baldwin County roads shapefile (in decimal degrees) with the Align tool. The TIF was then resampled and saved as an image with the geographic map coordinate system stored in its header file. Shapefiles were then created using the saved image as a template. Source data from the paper map is a generalized representation therefore the digital version is also generalized (RMS error of approximately + or - 4.5) and should be viewed as such. Updated data is based on more accurate GPS locations where available.
